This year the NCS Drama Department are taking part in the NT Connections, a national project run by the National Theatre for secondary schools and youth theatre groups. Ten new plays are commissioned by the NT from established writers with relevant themes and characters for this age group and we have chosen Dungeness by Chris Thompson. Set, as the titles suggests, on the far south-east coast of Britain, a group of young LGBT people living in a safe house, struggle with their identities and personal circumstances whilst also deciding whether to join a larger protest outside the safety of the house. The cast of 8 have been working incredibly hard over the past couple of months and the play is directed by Lucy Cuthbertson – GST Director of Drama & Performance and NCS Subject Leader of Drama, Zak Lewis. The play was performed on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 March at NCS and will be performed at The Royal & Derngate, Northampton on Wednesday 2 May before touring in the summer to other GST schools. It plans to also go on tour to Milton Keynes and Greenwich, London too this year. Note: this play contains some strong language and sexual references – suitable for 13+.
